What Are ISO Tank Containers Used To Transport?
The most common use for iOS containers is transportation of liquid substances, whether it be harmful or non harmful (hazardous). All IOS tank containers have to be built to a high standard and are built based upon ISO standards known as International Organisation for Standardisation.
Each container is built up from many layers providing protection, they are typically made from stainless steel. Depending on the type of material being shipped a different type of skin can be used. Each container consists of a manhole and has at least two valves one at the top and one on the bottom. Remember IOS tanks must be made following the standards set out and tend to be in the shame of cylinders.
Most Common Uses For ISO Tank Containers
The frame which the tank sits in measures about 6 meters long, 2.4 meters wide and between 2.4 – 2.5 meters high and varies in size and type and can carry between 21,000 and 40,000 litres of liquid. Liquids typically carried by IOS tank containers are:
- Liquid resins
- Gasoline / Diesel / Liquefied petroleum gas
- Vegetable oils/Heating oils
- Liquid food products
- Chemicals/ Solvents
- Nitric or Sulphuric acids
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Liquified sugars
- Beverages alcohol free or alcoholic
- Milk and dairy products
- Molasses

Specialist - IOS contains are specially designed to carry substances and can safely transport products.
Resistance - IOS tank containers are reliable and safe and are designed to withstand extreme damage and pressure.
Secure - IOS tank containers do not require products to be additionally packaged and it’s very rare any leakage occurs.
Temperature Storage - Liquid products can sometimes be heat sensitive and need to be maintained. IOS tank containers provide this and allow products to be transported by land or sea.
Flexitank vs ISO TANKS
FLEXITANK vs TANK CONTAINER
Flexitanks and ISO tank containers are frequently compared, but can only be applied in certain areas such as the type of shipment and the distance of shipment. Whilst both methods are used to ship large quantities of liquid it’s important to consider all factors to determine which method is better for your shipment.
Sending liquid shipments in bulk is a huge part of the transportation industry, so always consider the destination, the product and origin. This will help determine the method you choose when the choice may not be so obvious.
Flexitanks and IOS tank containers are both popular choices in the industry and are both used to transport liquids successfully there are obvious differences between them.
Flexitanks can be more cost effective if you’re transporting non hazardous substances depending on the destination. The cost of repositioning tank containers can be high if the business doesn’t go two ways due to tank containers needing to be repositioned to their origin or where the tank container supplier needs.
